A desert planet, also known as a dry planet, an arid planet, or a dune planet, is a type of terrestrial planet with a surface consistency similar to Earth's hot deserts.
Desert planets have little to no natural precipitation and have an extense habitable zone when modelled. A habitable desert planet does not have a completely uniform climate. Surface water is near to nonexistent in this type of planet, but it can be found near its poles, although the climate pattern strongly depends, as for other bodies, on that planet's axial tilt.
Hot desert planets without runaway greenhouse effect can exist in 0.5 AU around Sun-like stars. Minimum humidity of 1% is needed to wash off carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but too much water can act as a greenhouse gas itself. Higher atmospheric pressures increase the range of which the water can remain liquid.
They are the most common type of habitable planet in SpaceRiders.
